Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a seed
Hold a seed. Read Esther 6 in about four minutes, stopping at Esther 6:7: “Haman said to the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honor,” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Esther 6?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Esther 6 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “On that night, the king couldn’t sleep. He commanded the book of records of the chronicles to be brought, and they were read to the king.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “let royal clothing be brought which the king uses to wear, and the horse that the king rides on, and on the head of which a crown royal is set.” Esther 6 opens with these words: “On that night, the king couldn’t sleep. He commanded the book of records of the chronicles to be brought, and they were read to the king.” The line to keep is Esther 6:7: “Haman said to the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honor,” Carry the word “haman” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Esther 6:7: “Haman said to the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honor,” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Esther 6? Then try this: Read “Haman said to the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honor,” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Esther 6. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Esther 6:7. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Esther 6 and write Esther 6:7 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
