Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a handful of star stickers or a dark paper with white dots
Hold up a handful of star stickers or a dark paper with white dots. In about five minutes, tell the class this: God calls Abraham to a new land and promises a family as countless as the stars. Show the prop and ask, “What does this have to do with Abraham and the Stars?” Let two children answer. Then read Genesis 15:6 together: “He believed in Yahweh, who credited it to him for righteousness.” Close by asking one child to say the lesson back in their own words, using the prop.
Story script
Abraham was already old when God said, “Go to a land I will show you.” God promised to make his family into a great nation and to bless the whole world through them. Abraham and Sarah packed up their tents and went, even though they did not have a map with the ending drawn on it.
Years passed. The promise of a child still had not come. One night Abraham stood under a sky so full of stars it looked spilled. God said, “Look up. Count them if you can. That is how big your family will be.”
Abraham believed God. He did not understand the timing, and he still trusted the One who made the stars. Believing God was the most important thing Abraham did that night. Later, a baby named Isaac would laugh in Sarah’s tent, and the promise would keep going, all the way to Jesus.
Some of God’s good plans take longer than a bedtime. You can look at the night sky and remember that God is not guessing. If you belong to Jesus, you are part of the family Abraham could not finish counting.
Group game
Dim the room. Children add stars while counting promises: family, land, blessing. Stop and say, we cannot count them all.
Craft
Black paper, white crayon stars, and the words I will bless you.
Memory verse
Genesis 15:6
“He believed in Yahweh, who credited it to him for righteousness.”
Take-home prayer
Lord, help me believe you the way Abraham did. Thank you that your promises are bigger than I can count. Amen.
