Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a bowl of water and a spoon
Hold up a bowl of water and a spoon. In about five minutes, tell the class this: Jesus sleeps in a storm, then speaks, and the wind and waves obey him. Show the prop and ask, “What does this have to do with Peace, Be Still?” Let two children answer. Then read Mark 4:39 together: “He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” Close by asking one child to say the lesson back in their own words, using the prop.
Story script
Evening came, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” They left the crowd and set out in a boat. Jesus was tired from teaching. He fell asleep on a cushion in the stern.
A furious squall came up. Waves broke over the boat until it was nearly swamped. The disciples shook Jesus awake. “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” It was an honest, scared question.
Jesus got up and spoke to the wind and the waves. “Quiet! Be still!” The wind died down and it was completely calm. Then he asked, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified in a new way. “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Jesus cares in the storm, even when he seems quiet. He is Lord over the things that feel out of control. You can wake him with an honest prayer. The same voice that calmed Galilee can speak peace to a pounding heart.
Group game
Stir the water into a storm. A child playing Jesus says, Peace, be still, and everyone waits until the water rests.
Craft
Draw a boat, big waves, and a calm line after Jesus speaks.
Memory verse
Mark 4:39
“He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”
Take-home prayer
Jesus, sometimes I am scared and I wonder if you care. Thank you that you do. Speak peace to my heart tonight. Amen.
