Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a scroll of paper
Hold up a scroll of paper. In about five minutes, tell the class this: Twelve-year-old Jesus stays in the temple, listening and asking questions, then goes home and obeys. Show the prop and ask, “What does this have to do with The Boy Who Loved His Father’s House?” Let two children answer. Then read Luke 2:52 together: “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” Close by asking one child to say the lesson back in their own words, using the prop.
Story script
Every year Jesus’ family went to Jerusalem for Passover. When he was twelve, they started home with the traveling crowd. After a day, Mary and Joseph realized Jesus was not with the relatives. Any parent would feel that drop in the stomach. They hurried back.
They found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening and asking questions. Everyone was amazed at his understanding. Mary said, “Son, why have you treated us like this? We have been anxiously searching.” Jesus answered, “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” They did not fully understand. He went back to Nazareth with them and was obedient.
Luke says Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and people. The Son of God had a real childhood: questions, a growing body, and a home where he obeyed.
You are allowed to love learning and to ask good questions. Growing wise is part of following Jesus. And obedience at home is not small. It is how even Jesus grew.
Group game
Children sit as teachers. One child asks a real question about God. The class finds a verse together instead of pretending to know everything.
Craft
Draw twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple with the words I must be in my Father's house.
Memory verse
Luke 2:52
“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.”
Take-home prayer
Father, help me grow in wisdom, in my body, and in favor with you and with people. Teach me to listen and to obey. Amen.
