Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a folded cloth
Hold a folded cloth. Read Leviticus 5 in about four minutes, stopping at Leviticus 5:1: ““‘If anyone sins, in that he hears the voice of adjuration, he being a witness, whether he has seen or known, if he doesn’t report it, then he shall bear his iniquity.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Leviticus 5?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Leviticus 5 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““‘If anyone sins, in that he hears the voice of adjuration, he being a witness, whether he has seen or known, if he doesn’t report it, then he shall bear his iniquity.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He shall offer the second for a burnt offering, according to the ordinance; and the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin which he has sinned, and he shall be forgiven.” Leviticus 5 opens with these words: ““‘If anyone sins, in that he hears the voice of adjuration, he being a witness, whether he has seen or known, if he doesn’t report it,…” The line to keep is Leviticus 5:1: ““‘If anyone sins, in that he hears the voice of adjuration, he being a witness, whether he has seen or known, if he doesn’t report it, then he shall bear his…” Carry the word “anyone” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Leviticus 5:1: ““‘If anyone sins, in that he hears the voice of adjuration, he being a witness, whether he has seen or known, if he doesn’t report it, then he shall bear his iniquity.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Leviticus 5? Then try this: Read ““‘If anyone sins, in that he hears the voice of adjuration, he being a witness, whether he has seen or…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Leviticus 5. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Leviticus 5:1. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Leviticus 5 and write Leviticus 5:1 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
