Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a paper crown
Hold a paper crown. Read Exodus 19 in about four minutes, stopping at Exodus 19:3: “Moses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him out of the mountain, saying, “This is what you shall tell the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Exodus 19?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Exodus 19 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that same day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot through; whether it is animal or man, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come up to the mountain.”” Exodus 19 opens with these words: “In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that same day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.” The line to keep is Exodus 19:3: “Moses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him out of the mountain, saying, “This is what you shall tell the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:” Carry the word “moses” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 19:3: “Moses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him out of the mountain, saying, “This is what you shall tell the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Exodus 19? Then try this: Read “Moses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him out of the mountain, saying, “This is what you shall tell the…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Exodus 19. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Exodus 19:3. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Exodus 19 and write Exodus 19:3 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
