Obadiah 1 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord Yahweh says about Edom. We have heard news from Yahweh, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, “Arise, and let’s rise up against her in battle.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “In the day that you stood on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots for Jerusalem, even you were like one of them.” Obadiah 1 opens with these words: “The vision of Obadiah. We have heard news from Yahweh, and an ambassador is sent among the…” The line to keep is Obadiah 1:3: “The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, ‘Who will bring me down to…” Carry the word “pride” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Obadiah 1:3: “The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Obadiah 1? Then try this: Read “The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
“The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’”
