Exodus 5 opens with these words: “Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold…” The line to keep is Exodus 5:1: “Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the…” Carry the word “afterward” from that verse into the rest of the day.
Exodus 5 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’”” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.” Exodus 5 opens with these words: “Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold…” The line to keep is Exodus 5:1: “Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the…” Carry the word “afterward” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 5:1: “Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Exodus 5? Then try this: Read “Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
