🏔️ 2 Samuel 1
2 Samuel 1 opens with these words: “After the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag;” The line to keep is 2 Samuel 1:18: “(and he commanded them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):” Carry the word “commanded” from that verse into the rest of the day.
2 Samuel 1 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “After the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag;” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “David said to him, “Why were you not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy Yahweh’s anointed?”” 2 Samuel 1 opens with these words: “After the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag;” The line to keep is 2 Samuel 1:18: “(and he commanded them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):” Carry the word “commanded” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is 2 Samuel 1:18: “(and he commanded them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in 2 Samuel 1? Then try this: Read “(and he commanded them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
“(and he commanded them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):”
