Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a seed
Hold a seed. Read Genesis 50 in about four minutes, stopping at Genesis 50:20: “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is today, to save many people alive.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Genesis 50?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Genesis 50 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Joseph fell on his father’s face, wept on him, and kissed him.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Joseph returned into Egypt—he, and his brothers, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.” Genesis 50 opens with these words: “Joseph fell on his father’s face, wept on him, and kissed him.” The line to keep is Genesis 50:20: “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is today, to save many people alive.” Carry the word “meant” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Genesis 50:20: “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is today, to save many people alive.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Genesis 50? Then try this: Read “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is today, to save…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Genesis 50. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Genesis 50:20. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Genesis 50 and write Genesis 50:20 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
