Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a piece of bread
Hold a piece of bread. Read Zechariah 10 in about four minutes, stopping at Zechariah 10:7: “Ephraim will be like a mighty man, and their heart will rejoice as through wine; yes, their children will see it, and rejoice. Their heart will be glad in Yahweh.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Zechariah 10?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Zechariah 10 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Ask of Yahweh rain in the spring time, Yahweh who makes storm clouds, and he gives rain showers to everyone for the plants in the field.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Ephraim will be like a mighty man, and their heart will rejoice as through wine; yes, their children will see it, and rejoice. Their heart will be glad in Yahweh.” Zechariah 10 opens with these words: “Ask of Yahweh rain in the spring time, Yahweh who makes storm clouds, and he gives rain showers to everyone for the plants in the field.” The line to keep is Zechariah 10:7: “Ephraim will be like a mighty man, and their heart will rejoice as through wine; yes, their children will see it, and rejoice. Their heart will be glad in…” Carry the word “ephraim” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Zechariah 10:7: “Ephraim will be like a mighty man, and their heart will rejoice as through wine; yes, their children will see it, and rejoice. Their heart will be glad in Yahweh.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Zechariah 10? Then try this: Read “Ephraim will be like a mighty man, and their heart will rejoice as through wine; yes, their children will…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Zechariah 10. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Zechariah 10:7. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Zechariah 10 and write Zechariah 10:7 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
