Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a cup of water
Hold a cup of water. Read Nahum 2 in about four minutes, stopping at Nahum 2:4: “The chariots rage in the streets. They rush back and forth in the wide ways. Their appearance is like torches. They run like the lightnings.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Nahum 2?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Nahum 2 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “He who dashes in pieces has come up against you. Keep the fortress! Watch the way! Strengthen your waist! Fortify your power mightily!” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “It is decreed: she is uncovered, she is carried away; and her servants moan as with the voice of doves, beating on their breasts.” Nahum 2 opens with these words: “He who dashes in pieces has come up against you. Keep the fortress! Watch the way! Strengthen your waist! Fortify your power mightily!” The line to keep is Nahum 2:4: “The chariots rage in the streets. They rush back and forth in the wide ways. Their appearance is like torches. They run like the lightnings.” Carry the word “chariots” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Nahum 2:4: “The chariots rage in the streets. They rush back and forth in the wide ways. Their appearance is like torches. They run like the lightnings.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Nahum 2? Then try this: Read “The chariots rage in the streets. They rush back and forth in the wide ways. Their appearance is like…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Nahum 2. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Nahum 2:4. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Nahum 2 and write Nahum 2:4 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
