Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a ribbon

Hold a ribbon. Read Micah 3 in about four minutes, stopping at Micah 3:2: “You who hate the good, and love the evil; who tear off their skin, and their flesh from off their bones;” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Micah 3?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Micah 3 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “I said, “Please listen, you heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel: Isn’t it for you to know justice?” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “The seers shall be disappointed, and the diviners confounded. Yes, they shall all cover their lips; for there is no answer from God.”” Micah 3 opens with these words: “I said, “Please listen, you heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel: Isn’t it for you to know justice?” The line to keep is Micah 3:2: “You who hate the good, and love the evil; who tear off their skin, and their flesh from off their bones;” Carry the word “hate” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Micah 3:2: “You who hate the good, and love the evil; who tear off their skin, and their flesh from off their bones;” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Micah 3? Then try this: Read “You who hate the good, and love the evil; who tear off their skin, and their flesh from off their bones;” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Group game

Walk the room as if you are moving through Micah 3. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Micah 3:2. The last child says the whole verse.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Micah 3 and write Micah 3:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
