Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a key
Hold a key. Read Micah 2 in about four minutes, stopping at Micah 2:1: “Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Micah 2?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Micah 2 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Shall it be said, O house of Jacob: “Is Yahweh’s Spirit angry? Are these his doings? Don’t my words do good to him who walks blamelessly?”” Micah 2 opens with these words: “Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of…” The line to keep is Micah 2:1: “Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.” Carry the word “devise” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Micah 2:1: “Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Micah 2? Then try this: Read “Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Micah 2. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Micah 2:1. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Micah 2 and write Micah 2:1 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
