Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a seed
Hold a seed. Read Micah 1 in about four minutes, stopping at Micah 1:16: “Shave your heads, and cut off your hair for the children of your delight. Enlarge your baldness like the vulture; for they have gone into captivity from you!” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Micah 1?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Micah 1 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh’s word that came to Micah the Morashtite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “For her wounds are incurable; for it has come even to Judah. It reaches to the gate of my people, even to Jerusalem.” Micah 1 opens with these words: “Yahweh’s word that came to Micah the Morashtite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria…” The line to keep is Micah 1:16: “Shave your heads, and cut off your hair for the children of your delight. Enlarge your baldness like the vulture; for they have gone into captivity from you!” Carry the word “shave” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Micah 1:16: “Shave your heads, and cut off your hair for the children of your delight. Enlarge your baldness like the vulture; for they have gone into captivity from you!” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Micah 1? Then try this: Read “Shave your heads, and cut off your hair for the children of your delight. Enlarge your baldness like the…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Micah 1. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Micah 1:16. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Micah 1 and write Micah 1:16 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
