Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a ribbon
Hold a ribbon. Read Amos 7 in about four minutes, stopping at Amos 7:2: “When they finished eating the grass of the land, then I said, “Lord Yahweh, forgive, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small.”” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Amos 7?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Amos 7 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me: and behold, he formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and behold, it was the latter growth after the king’s harvest.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “The high places of Isaac will be desolate, the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”” Amos 7 opens with these words: “Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me: and behold, he formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and behold, it was…” The line to keep is Amos 7:2: “When they finished eating the grass of the land, then I said, “Lord Yahweh, forgive, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small.”” Carry the word “finished” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Amos 7:2: “When they finished eating the grass of the land, then I said, “Lord Yahweh, forgive, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small.”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Amos 7? Then try this: Read “When they finished eating the grass of the land, then I said, “Lord Yahweh, forgive, I beg you! How could…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Amos 7. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Amos 7:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Amos 7 and write Amos 7:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
