Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a paper crown
Hold a paper crown. Read Genesis 44 in about four minutes, stopping at Genesis 44:20: “We said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother; and his father loves him.’” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Genesis 44?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Genesis 44 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “He commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in his sack’s mouth.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Then Judah came near to him, and said, “Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord’s ears, and don’t let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even as Pharaoh.” Genesis 44 opens with these words: “He commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in his…” The line to keep is Genesis 44:20: “We said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother; and…” Carry the word “father” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Genesis 44:20: “We said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother; and his father loves him.’” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Genesis 44? Then try this: Read “We said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Genesis 44. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Genesis 44:20. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Genesis 44 and write Genesis 44:20 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
