Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a piece of bread
Hold a piece of bread. Read Amos 2 in about four minutes, stopping at Amos 2:8: “and they lay themselves down beside every altar on clothes taken in pledge; and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Amos 2?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Amos 2 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Moab, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime;” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.” Amos 2 opens with these words: “Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Moab, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he burned the bones of the…” The line to keep is Amos 2:8: “and they lay themselves down beside every altar on clothes taken in pledge; and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.” Carry the word “themselves” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Amos 2:8: “and they lay themselves down beside every altar on clothes taken in pledge; and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Amos 2? Then try this: Read “and they lay themselves down beside every altar on clothes taken in pledge; and in the house of their God…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Amos 2. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Amos 2:8. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Amos 2 and write Amos 2:8 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
