Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a cup of water
Hold a cup of water. Read Hosea 10 in about four minutes, stopping at Hosea 10:2: “Their heart is divided. Now they will be found guilty. He will demolish their altars. He will destroy their sacred stones.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Hosea 10?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Hosea 10 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Israel is a luxuriant vine that produces his fruit. According to the abundance of his fruit he has multiplied his altars. As their land has prospered, they have adorned their sacred stones.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, will be destroyed. The thorn and the thistle will come up on their altars. They will tell the mountains, “Cover us!” and the hills, “Fall on us!”” Hosea 10 opens with these words: “Israel is a luxuriant vine that produces his fruit. According to the abundance of his fruit he has multiplied his altars. As their land…” The line to keep is Hosea 10:2: “Their heart is divided. Now they will be found guilty. He will demolish their altars. He will destroy their sacred stones.” Carry the word “heart” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Hosea 10:2: “Their heart is divided. Now they will be found guilty. He will demolish their altars. He will destroy their sacred stones.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Hosea 10? Then try this: Read “Their heart is divided. Now they will be found guilty. He will demolish their altars. He will destroy their…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Hosea 10. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Hosea 10:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Hosea 10 and write Hosea 10:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
