Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a smooth stone
Hold a smooth stone. Read Daniel 10 in about four minutes, stopping at Daniel 10:19: “He said, “Greatly beloved man, don’t be afraid. Peace be to you. Be strong. Yes, be strong.” When he spoke to me, I was strengthened, and said, “Let my lord speak; for you have strengthened me.”” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Daniel 10?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Daniel 10 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed to Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, even a great warfare. He understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He said to me, Daniel, you greatly beloved man, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright; for I have been sent to you, now. When he had spoken this word to me, I stood trembling.” Daniel 10 opens with these words: “In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed to Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, even…” The line to keep is Daniel 10:19: “He said, “Greatly beloved man, don’t be afraid. Peace be to you. Be strong. Yes, be strong.” When he spoke to me, I was strengthened, and said, “Let my lord…” Carry the word “greatly” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Daniel 10:19: “He said, “Greatly beloved man, don’t be afraid. Peace be to you. Be strong. Yes, be strong.” When he spoke to me, I was strengthened, and said, “Let my lord speak; for you have strengthened me.”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Daniel 10? Then try this: Read “He said, “Greatly beloved man, don’t be afraid. Peace be to you. Be strong. Yes, be strong.” When he spoke…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Daniel 10. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Daniel 10:19. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Daniel 10 and write Daniel 10:19 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
