Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a smooth stone
Hold a smooth stone. Read Ezekiel 46 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 46:16: ““‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “If the prince gives a gift to any of his sons, it is his inheritance. It shall belong to his sons. It is their possession by inheritance.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 46?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 46 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “The gate of the inner court that looks toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the Sabbath day it shall be opened, and on the day of the new moon it shall be opened.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, ““‘“You shall prepare a lamb a year old without defect for a burnt offering to Yahweh daily. Morning by morning you shall prepare it.” Ezekiel 46 opens with these words: ““‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “The gate of the inner court that looks toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the…” The line to keep is Ezekiel 46:16: ““‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “If the prince gives a gift to any of his sons, it is his inheritance. It shall belong to his sons. It is their possession by…” Carry the word “thus” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 46:16: ““‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “If the prince gives a gift to any of his sons, it is his inheritance. It shall belong to his sons. It is their possession by inheritance.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 46? Then try this: Read ““‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “If the prince gives a gift to any of his sons, it is his inheritance. It shall…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 46. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 46:16. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 46 and write Ezekiel 46:16 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
