Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Ezekiel 43 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 43:2: “Behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east. His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth was illuminated with his glory.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 43?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 43 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looks toward the east.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “From the bottom on the ground to the lower ledge shall be two cubits, and the width one cubit; and from the lesser ledge to the greater ledge shall be four cubits, and the width a cubit.” Ezekiel 43 opens with these words: “Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looks toward the east.” The line to keep is Ezekiel 43:2: “Behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east. His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth was illuminated with his glory.” Carry the word “behold” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 43:2: “Behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east. His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth was illuminated with his glory.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 43? Then try this: Read “Behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east. His voice was like the sound of many…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 43. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 43:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 43 and write Ezekiel 43:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
