Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a ribbon
Hold a ribbon. Read Ezekiel 42 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 42:2: “Before the length of one hundred cubits was the north door, and the width was fifty cubits.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 42?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 42 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Then he brought me out into the outer court, the way toward the north. Then he brought me into the room that was opposite the separate place, and which was opposite the building toward the north.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “The way before them was like the appearance of the rooms which were toward the north; according to their length so was their width: and all their exits were both according to their fashions, and according to their doors.” Ezekiel 42 opens with these words: “Then he brought me out into the outer court, the way toward the north. Then he brought me into the room that was opposite the separate…” The line to keep is Ezekiel 42:2: “Before the length of one hundred cubits was the north door, and the width was fifty cubits.” Carry the word “length” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 42:2: “Before the length of one hundred cubits was the north door, and the width was fifty cubits.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 42? Then try this: Read “Before the length of one hundred cubits was the north door, and the width was fifty cubits.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 42. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 42:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 42 and write Ezekiel 42:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
