Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a folded cloth
Hold a folded cloth. Read Ezekiel 39 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 39:25: ““Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Now I will reverse the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel. I will be jealous for my holy name.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 39?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 39 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““You, son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Behold, I am against you, Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Those who pass through the land will pass through; and when anyone sees a man’s bone, then will he set up a sign by it, until the undertakers have buried it in the valley of Hamon Gog.” Ezekiel 39 opens with these words: ““You, son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Behold, I am against you, Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech, and…” The line to keep is Ezekiel 39:25: ““Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Now I will reverse the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel. I will be jealous for my holy…” Carry the word “thus” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 39:25: ““Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Now I will reverse the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel. I will be jealous for my holy name.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 39? Then try this: Read ““Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Now I will reverse the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy on the…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 39. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 39:25. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 39 and write Ezekiel 39:25 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
