Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a piece of bread

Hold a piece of bread. Read Ezekiel 37 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 37:3: “He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I answered, “Lord Yahweh, you know.”” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 37?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Ezekiel 37 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh’s hand was on me, and he brought me out in Yahweh’s Spirit, and set me down in the middle of the valley; and it was full of bones.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Yahweh’s word came again to me, saying,” Ezekiel 37 opens with these words: “Yahweh’s hand was on me, and he brought me out in Yahweh’s Spirit, and set me down in the middle of the valley; and it was full of bones.” The line to keep is Ezekiel 37:3: “He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I answered, “Lord Yahweh, you know.”” Carry the word “bones” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 37:3: “He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I answered, “Lord Yahweh, you know.”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Ezekiel 37? Then try this: Read “He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I answered, “Lord Yahweh, you know.”” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
