Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a smooth stone
Hold a smooth stone. Read Ezekiel 36 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 36:2: “Thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Because the enemy has said against you, “Aha!” and, “The ancient high places are ours in possession!”’” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 36?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 36 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “You, son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel, and say, “You mountains of Israel, hear Yahweh’s word.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “When they came to the nations where they went, they profaned my holy name; in that men said of them, ‘These are Yahweh’s people, and have left his land.’” Ezekiel 36 opens with these words: “You, son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel, and say, “You mountains of Israel, hear Yahweh’s word.” The line to keep is Ezekiel 36:2: “Thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Because the enemy has said against you, “Aha!” and, “The ancient high places are ours in possession!”’” Carry the word “thus” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 36:2: “Thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Because the enemy has said against you, “Aha!” and, “The ancient high places are ours in possession!”’” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 36? Then try this: Read “Thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Because the enemy has said against you, “Aha!” and, “The ancient high places are…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 36. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 36:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 36 and write Ezekiel 36:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
