Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a key
Hold a key. Read Ezekiel 31 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 31:10: ““Therefore thus said the Lord Yahweh: ‘Because you are exalted in stature, and he has set his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 31?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 31 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “In the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, ““Therefore thus said the Lord Yahweh: ‘Because you are exalted in stature, and he has set his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;” Ezekiel 31 opens with these words: “In the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,” The line to keep is Ezekiel 31:10: ““Therefore thus said the Lord Yahweh: ‘Because you are exalted in stature, and he has set his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his…” Carry the word “thus” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 31:10: ““Therefore thus said the Lord Yahweh: ‘Because you are exalted in stature, and he has set his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 31? Then try this: Read ““Therefore thus said the Lord Yahweh: ‘Because you are exalted in stature, and he has set his top among the…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 31. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 31:10. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 31 and write Ezekiel 31:10 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
