Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a folded cloth
Hold a folded cloth. Read Ezekiel 29 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 29:8: ““‘Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Behold, I will bring a sword on you, and will cut off man and animal from you.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 29?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 29 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “In the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day of the month, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “No foot of man will pass through it, nor will any animal foot pass through it. It won’t be inhabited for forty years.” Ezekiel 29 opens with these words: “In the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day of the month, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,” The line to keep is Ezekiel 29:8: ““‘Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Behold, I will bring a sword on you, and will cut off man and animal from you.” Carry the word “thus” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 29:8: ““‘Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Behold, I will bring a sword on you, and will cut off man and animal from you.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 29? Then try this: Read ““‘Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Behold, I will bring a sword on you, and will cut off man and animal…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 29. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 29:8. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 29 and write Ezekiel 29:8 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
