Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a piece of bread
Hold a piece of bread. Read Ezekiel 17 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 17:3: “and say, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “A great eagle with great wings and long feathers, full of feathers, which had various colors, came to Lebanon, and took the top of the cedar.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 17?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 17 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He took some of the royal offspring, and made a covenant with him. He also brought him under an oath, and took away the mighty of the land;” Ezekiel 17 opens with these words: “Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,” The line to keep is Ezekiel 17:3: “and say, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “A great eagle with great wings and long feathers, full of feathers, which had various colors, came to Lebanon, and took…” Carry the word “thus” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 17:3: “and say, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “A great eagle with great wings and long feathers, full of feathers, which had various colors, came to Lebanon, and took the top of the cedar.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 17? Then try this: Read “and say, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “A great eagle with great wings and long feathers, full of feathers,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 17. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 17:3. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 17 and write Ezekiel 17:3 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
