Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a small lamp
Hold a small lamp. Read Ezekiel 15 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 15:6: “Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I will give the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 15?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 15 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Behold, when it was whole, it was suitable for no work. How much less, when the fire has devoured it, and it has been burned, will it yet be suitable for any work?”” Ezekiel 15 opens with these words: “Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,” The line to keep is Ezekiel 15:6: “Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I will give the inhabitants…” Carry the word “thus” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 15:6: “Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I will give the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 15? Then try this: Read “Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 15. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 15:6. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 15 and write Ezekiel 15:6 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
