Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a paper crown
Hold a paper crown. Read Ezekiel 4 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 4:13: “Yahweh said, “Even thus will the children of Israel eat their bread unclean, among the nations where I will drive them.”” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 4?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 4 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““You also, son of man, take a tile, and lay it before yourself, and portray on it a city, even Jerusalem.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, ““Take for yourself also wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt, and put them in one vessel. Make bread of it. According to the number of the days that you will lie on your side, even three hundred ninety days, you shall eat of it.” Ezekiel 4 opens with these words: ““You also, son of man, take a tile, and lay it before yourself, and portray on it a city, even Jerusalem.” The line to keep is Ezekiel 4:13: “Yahweh said, “Even thus will the children of Israel eat their bread unclean, among the nations where I will drive them.”” Carry the word “thus” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 4:13: “Yahweh said, “Even thus will the children of Israel eat their bread unclean, among the nations where I will drive them.”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 4? Then try this: Read “Yahweh said, “Even thus will the children of Israel eat their bread unclean, among the nations where I will…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 4. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 4:13. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 4 and write Ezekiel 4:13 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
