Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Ezekiel 3 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 3:11: “Go to them of the captivity, to the children of your people, and speak to them, and tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh;’ whether they will hear, or whether they will refuse.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 3?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 3 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “He said to me, “Son of man, eat what you find. Eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel.”” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “So the Spirit lifted me up, and took me away; and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; and Yahweh’s hand was strong on me.” Ezekiel 3 opens with these words: “He said to me, “Son of man, eat what you find. Eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel.”” The line to keep is Ezekiel 3:11: “Go to them of the captivity, to the children of your people, and speak to them, and tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh;’ whether they will hear, or whether…” Carry the word “captivity” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 3:11: “Go to them of the captivity, to the children of your people, and speak to them, and tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh;’ whether they will hear, or whether they will refuse.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 3? Then try this: Read “Go to them of the captivity, to the children of your people, and speak to them, and tell them, ‘Thus says…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 3. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 3:11. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 3 and write Ezekiel 3:11 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
