Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a ribbon
Hold a ribbon. Read Ezekiel 2 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezekiel 2:4: “The children are impudent and stiff-hearted. I am sending you to them, and you shall tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh.’” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezekiel 2?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezekiel 2 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “He said to me, “Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak with you.”” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “You, son of man, don’t be afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you, and you do dwell among scorpions. Don’t be afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.” Ezekiel 2 opens with these words: “He said to me, “Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak with you.”” The line to keep is Ezekiel 2:4: “The children are impudent and stiff-hearted. I am sending you to them, and you shall tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh.’” Carry the word “children” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezekiel 2:4: “The children are impudent and stiff-hearted. I am sending you to them, and you shall tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh.’” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezekiel 2? Then try this: Read “The children are impudent and stiff-hearted. I am sending you to them, and you shall tell them, ‘Thus says…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezekiel 2. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezekiel 2:4. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezekiel 2 and write Ezekiel 2:4 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
