Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a small lamp

Hold a small lamp. Read Jeremiah 22 in about four minutes, stopping at Jeremiah 22:22: “The wind will feed all your shepherds, and your lovers will go into captivity. Surely then you will be ashamed and confounded for all your wickedness.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Jeremiah 22?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Jeremiah 22 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh said, “Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak this word, there:” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He judged the cause of the poor and needy; so it was well, then. Wasn’t this to know me?” says Yahweh.” Jeremiah 22 opens with these words: “Yahweh said, “Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak this word, there:” The line to keep is Jeremiah 22:22: “The wind will feed all your shepherds, and your lovers will go into captivity. Surely then you will be ashamed and confounded for all your wickedness.” Carry the word “wind” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Jeremiah 22:22: “The wind will feed all your shepherds, and your lovers will go into captivity. Surely then you will be ashamed and confounded for all your wickedness.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Jeremiah 22? Then try this: Read “The wind will feed all your shepherds, and your lovers will go into captivity. Surely then you will be…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
