Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Jeremiah 20 in about four minutes, stopping at Jeremiah 20:12: “But, Yahweh of Armies, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance on them; for to you I have revealed my cause.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Jeremiah 20?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Jeremiah 20 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Now Pashhur, the son of Immer the priest, who was chief officer in Yahweh’s house, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “For I have heard the defaming of many, “Terror on every side! Denounce, and we will denounce him!” say all my familiar friends, those who watch for my fall. “Perhaps he will be persuaded, and we will prevail against him, and we will take our revenge on him.”” Jeremiah 20 opens with these words: “Now Pashhur, the son of Immer the priest, who was chief officer in Yahweh’s house, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things.” The line to keep is Jeremiah 20:12: “But, Yahweh of Armies, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance on them; for to you I have revealed my cause.” Carry the word “armies” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Jeremiah 20:12: “But, Yahweh of Armies, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance on them; for to you I have revealed my cause.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Jeremiah 20? Then try this: Read “But, Yahweh of Armies, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Jeremiah 20. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Jeremiah 20:12. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Jeremiah 20 and write Jeremiah 20:12 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
