Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a smooth stone
Hold a smooth stone. Read Jeremiah 13 in about four minutes, stopping at Jeremiah 13:22: “If you say in your heart, “Why have these things come on me?” Your skirts are uncovered because of the greatness of your iniquity, and your heels suffer violence.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Jeremiah 13?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Jeremiah 13 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh said to me, “Go, and buy yourself a linen belt, and put it on your waist, and don’t put it in water.”” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together,” says Yahweh: “I will not pity, spare, or have compassion, that I should not destroy them.”’”” Jeremiah 13 opens with these words: “Yahweh said to me, “Go, and buy yourself a linen belt, and put it on your waist, and don’t put it in water.”” The line to keep is Jeremiah 13:22: “If you say in your heart, “Why have these things come on me?” Your skirts are uncovered because of the greatness of your iniquity, and your heels suffer…” Carry the word “heart” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Jeremiah 13:22: “If you say in your heart, “Why have these things come on me?” Your skirts are uncovered because of the greatness of your iniquity, and your heels suffer violence.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Jeremiah 13? Then try this: Read “If you say in your heart, “Why have these things come on me?” Your skirts are uncovered because of the…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Jeremiah 13. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Jeremiah 13:22. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Jeremiah 13 and write Jeremiah 13:22 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
