Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Jeremiah 10 in about four minutes, stopping at Jeremiah 10:7: “Who shouldn’t fear you, King of the nations? For it belongs to you. Because among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is no one like you.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Jeremiah 10?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Jeremiah 10 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Hear the word which Yahweh speaks to you, house of Israel!” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “When he utters his voice, the waters in the heavens roar, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings for the rain, and brings the wind out of his treasuries.” Jeremiah 10 opens with these words: “Hear the word which Yahweh speaks to you, house of Israel!” The line to keep is Jeremiah 10:7: “Who shouldn’t fear you, King of the nations? For it belongs to you. Because among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is no…” Carry the word “shouldn” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Jeremiah 10:7: “Who shouldn’t fear you, King of the nations? For it belongs to you. Because among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is no one like you.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Jeremiah 10? Then try this: Read “Who shouldn’t fear you, King of the nations? For it belongs to you. Because among all the wise men of the…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Jeremiah 10. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Jeremiah 10:7. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Jeremiah 10 and write Jeremiah 10:7 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
