Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a cup of water
Hold a cup of water. Read Jeremiah 5 in about four minutes, stopping at Jeremiah 5:24: “They don’t say in their heart, ‘Let us now fear Yahweh our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season; who preserves to us the appointed weeks of the harvest.’” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Jeremiah 5?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Jeremiah 5 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““Run back and forth through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in its wide places, if you can find a man, if there is anyone who does justly, who seeks truth, then I will pardon her.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Their quiver is an open tomb. They are all mighty men.” Jeremiah 5 opens with these words: ““Run back and forth through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in its wide places, if you can find a man, if there…” The line to keep is Jeremiah 5:24: “They don’t say in their heart, ‘Let us now fear Yahweh our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season; who preserves to us the…” Carry the word “heart” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Jeremiah 5:24: “They don’t say in their heart, ‘Let us now fear Yahweh our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season; who preserves to us the appointed weeks of the harvest.’” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Jeremiah 5? Then try this: Read “They don’t say in their heart, ‘Let us now fear Yahweh our God, who gives rain, both the former and the…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Jeremiah 5. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Jeremiah 5:24. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Jeremiah 5 and write Jeremiah 5:24 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
