Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a key
Hold a key. Read Isaiah 64 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 64:2: “As when fire kindles the brushwood, and the fire causes the water to boil; Make your name known to your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at your presence!” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 64?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 64 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Oh that you would tear the heavens, that you would come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “There is no one who calls on your name, who stirs himself up to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have consumed us by means of our iniquities.” Isaiah 64 opens with these words: “Oh that you would tear the heavens, that you would come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence.” The line to keep is Isaiah 64:2: “As when fire kindles the brushwood, and the fire causes the water to boil; Make your name known to your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at your…” Carry the word “fire” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 64:2: “As when fire kindles the brushwood, and the fire causes the water to boil; Make your name known to your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at your presence!” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 64? Then try this: Read “As when fire kindles the brushwood, and the fire causes the water to boil; Make your name known to your…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 64. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 64:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 64 and write Isaiah 64:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
