Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a ribbon
Hold a ribbon. Read Isaiah 55 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 55:7: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to Yahweh, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will freely pardon.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 55?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 55 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““Hey! Come, everyone who thirsts, to the waters! Come, he who has no money, buy, and eat! Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to Yahweh, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will freely pardon.” Isaiah 55 opens with these words: ““Hey! Come, everyone who thirsts, to the waters! Come, he who has no money, buy, and eat! Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and…” The line to keep is Isaiah 55:7: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to Yahweh, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will…” Carry the word “wicked” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 55:7: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to Yahweh, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will freely pardon.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 55? Then try this: Read “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to Yahweh, and he will…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 55. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 55:7. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 55 and write Isaiah 55:7 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
