Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a seed

Hold a seed. Read Isaiah 53 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 53:4: “Surely he has borne our sickness, and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 53?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Isaiah 53 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Who has believed our message? To whom has the arm of Yahweh been revealed?” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he didn’t open his mouth. As a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he didn’t open his mouth.” Isaiah 53 opens with these words: “Who has believed our message? To whom has the arm of Yahweh been revealed?” The line to keep is Isaiah 53:4: “Surely he has borne our sickness, and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted.” Carry the word “surely” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 53:4: “Surely he has borne our sickness, and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Isaiah 53? Then try this: Read “Surely he has borne our sickness, and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Group game

Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 53. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 53:4. The last child says the whole verse.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 53 and write Isaiah 53:4 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
