Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a smooth stone
Hold a smooth stone. Read Isaiah 49 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 49:4: “But I said, “I have labored in vain. I have spent my strength in vain for nothing; yet surely the justice due to me is with Yahweh, and my reward with my God.”” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 49?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 49 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Listen, islands, to me. Listen, you peoples, from afar: Yahweh has called me from the womb; from the inside of my mother he has mentioned my name.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “But Zion said, “Yahweh has forsaken me, and the Lord has forgotten me.”” Isaiah 49 opens with these words: “Listen, islands, to me. Listen, you peoples, from afar: Yahweh has called me from the womb; from the inside of my mother he has mentioned…” The line to keep is Isaiah 49:4: “But I said, “I have labored in vain. I have spent my strength in vain for nothing; yet surely the justice due to me is with Yahweh, and my reward with my God.”” Carry the word “labored” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 49:4: “But I said, “I have labored in vain. I have spent my strength in vain for nothing; yet surely the justice due to me is with Yahweh, and my reward with my God.”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 49? Then try this: Read “But I said, “I have labored in vain. I have spent my strength in vain for nothing; yet surely the justice…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 49. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 49:4. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 49 and write Isaiah 49:4 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
