Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a small lamp

Hold a small lamp. Read Isaiah 48 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 48:2: “(for they call themselves citizens of the holy city, and rely on the God of Israel; Yahweh of Armies is his name):” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 48?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Isaiah 48 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““Hear this, house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel, and have come out of the waters of Judah. You swear by Yahweh’s name, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, ““Listen to me, O Jacob, and Israel my called: I am he; I am the first, I am also the last.” Isaiah 48 opens with these words: ““Hear this, house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel, and have come out of the waters of Judah. You swear by Yahweh’s…” The line to keep is Isaiah 48:2: “(for they call themselves citizens of the holy city, and rely on the God of Israel; Yahweh of Armies is his name):” Carry the word “call” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 48:2: “(for they call themselves citizens of the holy city, and rely on the God of Israel; Yahweh of Armies is his name):” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Isaiah 48? Then try this: Read “(for they call themselves citizens of the holy city, and rely on the God of Israel; Yahweh of Armies is his…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Group game

Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 48. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 48:2. The last child says the whole verse.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 48 and write Isaiah 48:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
