Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a ribbon
Hold a ribbon. Read Isaiah 45 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 45:7: “I form the light, and create darkness. I make peace, and create calamity. I am Yahweh, who does all these things.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 45?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 45 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held, to subdue nations before him, and strip kings of their armor; to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut:” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will make straight all his ways. He shall build my city, and he shall let my exiles go free, not for price nor reward,” says Yahweh of Armies.” Isaiah 45 opens with these words: “Yahweh says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held, to subdue nations before him, and strip kings of their armor; to open…” The line to keep is Isaiah 45:7: “I form the light, and create darkness. I make peace, and create calamity. I am Yahweh, who does all these things.” Carry the word “form” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 45:7: “I form the light, and create darkness. I make peace, and create calamity. I am Yahweh, who does all these things.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 45? Then try this: Read “I form the light, and create darkness. I make peace, and create calamity. I am Yahweh, who does all these…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 45. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 45:7. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 45 and write Isaiah 45:7 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
