Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a key
Hold a key. Read Isaiah 44 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 44:6: “This is what Yahweh, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, Yahweh of Armies, says: “I am the first, and I am the last; and besides me there is no God.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 44?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 44 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yet listen now, Jacob my servant, and Israel, whom I have chosen.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Then it will be for a man to burn; and he takes some of it, and warms himself. Yes, he burns it, and bakes bread. Yes, he makes a god, and worships it; he makes it a carved image, and falls down to it.” Isaiah 44 opens with these words: “Yet listen now, Jacob my servant, and Israel, whom I have chosen.” The line to keep is Isaiah 44:6: “This is what Yahweh, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, Yahweh of Armies, says: “I am the first, and I am the last; and besides me there is no God.” Carry the word “king” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 44:6: “This is what Yahweh, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, Yahweh of Armies, says: “I am the first, and I am the last; and besides me there is no God.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 44? Then try this: Read “This is what Yahweh, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, Yahweh of Armies, says: “I am the first, and I am…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 44. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 44:6. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 44 and write Isaiah 44:6 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
