Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a folded cloth
Hold a folded cloth. Read Isaiah 42 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 42:17: ““Those who trust in engraved images, who tell molten images, ‘You are our gods’ will be turned back. They will be utterly disappointed.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 42?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 42 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““Behold, my servant, whom I uphold; my chosen, in whom my soul delights— I have put my Spirit on him. He will bring justice to the nations.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Yahweh will go out like a mighty man. He will stir up zeal like a man of war. He will raise a war cry. Yes, he will shout aloud. He will triumph over his enemies.” Isaiah 42 opens with these words: ““Behold, my servant, whom I uphold; my chosen, in whom my soul delights— I have put my Spirit on him. He will bring justice to the nations.” The line to keep is Isaiah 42:17: ““Those who trust in engraved images, who tell molten images, ‘You are our gods’ will be turned back. They will be utterly disappointed.” Carry the word “trust” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 42:17: ““Those who trust in engraved images, who tell molten images, ‘You are our gods’ will be turned back. They will be utterly disappointed.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 42? Then try this: Read ““Those who trust in engraved images, who tell molten images, ‘You are our gods’ will be turned back. They…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 42. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 42:17. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 42 and write Isaiah 42:17 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
