Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a smooth stone
Hold a smooth stone. Read Isaiah 39 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 39:8: “Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “Yahweh’s word which you have spoken is good.” He said moreover, “For there will be peace and truth in my days.”” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 39?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 39 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “At that time, Merodach Baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah; for he heard that he had been sick, and had recovered.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of Yahweh of Armies:” Isaiah 39 opens with these words: “At that time, Merodach Baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah; for he heard that he had been…” The line to keep is Isaiah 39:8: “Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “Yahweh’s word which you have spoken is good.” He said moreover, “For there will be peace and truth in my days.”” Carry the word “hezekiah” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 39:8: “Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “Yahweh’s word which you have spoken is good.” He said moreover, “For there will be peace and truth in my days.”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 39? Then try this: Read “Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “Yahweh’s word which you have spoken is good.” He said moreover, “For there…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 39. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 39:8. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 39 and write Isaiah 39:8 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
