Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Isaiah 36 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 36:4: “Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “What confidence is this in which you trust?” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 36?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 36 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah, and captured them.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”” Isaiah 36 opens with these words: “Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah, and captured them.” The line to keep is Isaiah 36:4: “Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “What confidence is this in which you trust?” Carry the word “rabshakeh” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 36:4: “Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “What confidence is this in which you trust?” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 36? Then try this: Read “Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “What confidence…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 36. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 36:4. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 36 and write Isaiah 36:4 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
