Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a ribbon
Hold a ribbon. Read Isaiah 35 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 35:4: “Tell those who have a fearful heart, “Be strong. Don’t be afraid. Behold, your God will come with vengeance, God’s retribution. He will come and save you.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 35?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 35 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “The wilderness and the dry land will be glad. The desert will rejoice and blossom like a rose.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Then the lame man will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute will sing; for waters will break out in the wilderness, and streams in the desert.” Isaiah 35 opens with these words: “The wilderness and the dry land will be glad. The desert will rejoice and blossom like a rose.” The line to keep is Isaiah 35:4: “Tell those who have a fearful heart, “Be strong. Don’t be afraid. Behold, your God will come with vengeance, God’s retribution. He will come and save you.” Carry the word “tell” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 35:4: “Tell those who have a fearful heart, “Be strong. Don’t be afraid. Behold, your God will come with vengeance, God’s retribution. He will come and save you.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 35? Then try this: Read “Tell those who have a fearful heart, “Be strong. Don’t be afraid. Behold, your God will come with vengeance,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 35. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 35:4. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 35 and write Isaiah 35:4 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
