Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a folded cloth
Hold a folded cloth. Read Isaiah 22 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 22:2: “You that are full of shouting, a tumultuous city, a joyous town; your slain are not slain with the sword, neither are they dead in battle.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 22?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 22 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “The burden of the valley of vision. What ails you now, that you have all gone up to the housetops?” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “and behold, joy and gladness, killing cattle and killing sheep, eating meat and drinking wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die.”” Isaiah 22 opens with these words: “The burden of the valley of vision. What ails you now, that you have all gone up to the housetops?” The line to keep is Isaiah 22:2: “You that are full of shouting, a tumultuous city, a joyous town; your slain are not slain with the sword, neither are they dead in battle.” Carry the word “full” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 22:2: “You that are full of shouting, a tumultuous city, a joyous town; your slain are not slain with the sword, neither are they dead in battle.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 22? Then try this: Read “You that are full of shouting, a tumultuous city, a joyous town; your slain are not slain with the sword,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 22. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 22:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 22 and write Isaiah 22:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
